Hi there, I have a five year old Indian Runner Duck (Pippin) whom I hatched from an egg.
I came home Friday last week to find that rather than standing upright and tall like a Runner should, she was hunched with a swollen belly. My first thought was that she was egg bound (she hadn't laid in a few days) so I had a look at her vent but she didn't seem to be straining at all. I decided to err on the side of caution anyway and started dosing her with Calcium Gluconate and giving her warm baths to try and relax her muscles but nothing seemed to make any difference.
She was completely fine in herself, still eating, drinking and preening but was finding it hard to walk due to the big bulge.
Yesterday I decided to go out on a whim and call my local vets, they booked me in that night and gave Pippin a shot of Oxytocin to try and get things moving along a little bit. They told me that if she hadn't laid by 9 O'clock the next morning, I should bring her back and they would get her X-rayed under anaesthetic.
This morning I have gone to check on her and the bulge has swollen massively, she's finding it even harder to walk and keeps falling over.
Does anyone have any advice for me, I could certainly do with some as I'm going out of my mind with worry for her!

Poor Pippin! I would take her back in to the vet asap... not sure if she is eggbound or something else has stopped her laying, but vet would be best, I think... xray or ultrasound to see what's going on...

So sorry you are dealing with this...

We've just got back from visiting the specialist, she's drained some of the fluid and put Pippin on antibiotics and painkillers. The vet reckons that Pippin's chances are about 50/50 now, so fingers crossed!
At the minute she's enjoying the sunshine in the garden.
