Help! My Quail, George, who turns 7 weeks old on Wednesday is struggling to lay what I hope is an egg. It looks like an egg but might me an organ. It doesn't feel like an egg. I don't know what to do! I thought it was a male but I don't know how to gender silver.
She was fine this morning. Any advice? It feels soft but she's been like that for 10 mins. I don't want to cull. She's straining and closing her eyes for long periods of time but is still walking around. Help!
She's never laid an egg.

It's coming further out with the membrane looking thing still on it. She's straining to push it out but the red thing is still on it.

That is a prolapsed vent and partially egg bound. Start by putting in in a warm (quail body temp or a couple degrees warmer) epsom salt bath. something a couple inches deeps should be plenty. If you have some calcium carbonate, get that into her if you can.

Keep her isolated and in dim light for a couple days to give her a break from laying so the prolapsed vent has a chance to heal.

Has she been getting enough calcium? Make sure she's getting enough to help keep this from happening again.

I think so. One of my other quail on the same diet as this one and they have nice hard eggshells.
I'm getting what u said ready.

We got the egg out but now she's still got a prolapse. The antibiotic ointment we have is chlorsic ointment/cream.
Will that work ok?

It's going back in slowly and we put a bit of chlorsig ointment on the prolapse. She's sort of lethargic now and standing still with her eyes closed for longer than normal periods of time. I hope she'll be ok she's my baby ♥️

Another strange thing is, the eggs are all fertile that come from that cage, which means Hercules, who I thought was a girl, is male. She's the calmest of all of them!
