Help recall on romaine lettuce

My ducks were glad to get frozen peas and chopped green onions today, but they miss their breakfast salad so much. All the green leaf items are banished from our stores. They got 2 big handfuls of raw peanuts before bed and that perked them up a bit.

"There is a danger with feeding them too much (or feeding it long-term), as onions are mildly toxic to ducks. They can also give the eggs an “onion-y” flavor. Onions are often on lists of “never feed your duck/chicken this!” While onions definitely shouldn’t be any regular part of a duck’s diet, you don’t need to fret about those leftovers. People do occasionally feed onions to poultry with no problems. A few bites here and there won’t hurt. The same goes for garlic; large amounts can be harmful and can give the eggs a strange flavor.

A little is okay. A lot is not."

Onions and garlic are toxic to a lot of animals. That's what they were trying to do, be inedible. We love 'em because they don't generally bother us, but mammals in particular tend to be vulnerable. Poultry are okay with a bit of seasoning or something else thrown in by mistake, but other animals can't handle even that much.

Humans are mammals. Some humans have issues eating onion and garlic as well.

Correction: mammals other than humans. Human can eat a lot of things that are intended to be toxic. Coffee and all spicy peppers are other examples of plants that are supposed to be toxic, but that we can consume with no ill effects. And when a human eats too much onion/garlic, it's usually just uncomfortable, whereas in other species (including cats) it can be deadly.

Y'all are confusing me with the garlic being deadly/toxic unless you mean in large EXTREMELY large amounts then ok, I can see that.
I've always given my cats and dogs garlic to get rid of worms, granted it's never been in any extreme amounts just enough mixed into their food that they can't really distinguish, and I still know they get it all. I've never lost a cat because of garlic, but they did get rid of those worms.

Edit: I went back and reread - you're talking about extreme amounts, and even then with any of mine you'd have to basically be force feeding them that much garlic or onions to get to that level since none of them even like it that much - you should have seen speedys side eye glare the day I gave her a small piece of garlic, lol.

Escarole is the curly leaf lettuce that someone spoke about earlier. I would give them any kind of lettuce that is darker than romaine hearts. i.e. butter lettuce, bib lettuce, kale, collard greens. All of these will work and are much more vitamin packed than romaine.

edit. I just saw that all green leaf produce is banned in your stores? That's crazy!

The produce is banned now because someone lowered the regulations on farm water testing, farmers started using contaminated water on their crops, and now there's potentially deadly illness in a lot of greens. It's almost like those regulations exist for a reason, isn't it?

We just had ground beef pulled from shelves for ecoli too

Was going to have my favorite taco supper last night :he had chicken tacos instead

Forget the lettuce, if this keeps up the ducks are going to be fed to me for treats :drool
