Hello everyone. I'm a new member and had chickens in the past but mine were always healthy so I'm not sure what to do.
A client of mine is in the hospital and I offered to look after his 4 hens but when I saw them up close I found that they have some serious looking problems. There are two Barred Rocks and two Buff colored ones (Offs?). Three have bright red areas around their vent and lower from the size of a silver dollar to one that is bald for almost her whole back end with only a few tail feathers plus under her wings. This one also seems swollen behind and also has a huge oval bulge in her neck (I assume crop) which massaging didn't seem to help. She also has a big wound area (approx 1" x 2") below and a little to the side of her vent. It looks like a shallow crater and looked a little wet when I first saw it but then she had a dirt bath and when I caught her and tried to clean it I found it to be a very hard, stiff surface that I couldn't clean with water.
The poop and wood shavings combo on the floor of their cage and the nesting area was up to 4 inches thick and rock solid.

How sad. Sounds like a tricky situation for you. It is likely they are pecking each other and may even be eating tissue from the one with the wound. A cage unfortunatel sounds like way too little space, which usually results in this behavior. It can be very difficult to stop this behavior even with good care. There is a fair chance they have mites/lice and need treatment, as well.. You could pick up some poultry dust or spray at the feed store and at least give them an initial treatment. Is there any feed there? You could get a small bag of game bird feed which would give them a bit more nourishment than layer feed. It also sounds like they could be removed from this person on grounds of abuse / neglect. Perhaps the person has not really been able to care for them, and a relative could step in?

Probably the two buff colored ones are buff Orps, or Orpingtons.

He had some DE so I spread some of that around in case there are mites. The coop is six feet long by four feet wide at the bottom and is triangular. The roosting/nesting area is up in the peak, like a loft. Is that too small for four hens? I know that he let them out sometimes when he was home to run in his back yard. Don't know how often.
From the descriptions I found online I think at least one has vent gleet so I put apple cider vinegar in their water. Any other suggestions?
Wondering if the worst one will be able to survive her wound? They are not tame so it's not easy to catch and handle them. Not sure how I could hold her in a bath for 20 minutes as suggested.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
