Hello everyone. I'm a new member and had chickens in the past but mine were always healthy so I'm not sure what to do.
A client of mine is in the hospital and I offered to look after his 4 hens but when I saw them up close I found that they have some serious looking problems. There are two Barred Rocks and two Buff colored ones (Offs?). Three have bright red areas around their vent and lower from the size of a silver dollar to one that is bald for almost her whole back end with only a few tail feathers plus under her wings. This one also seems swollen behind and also has a huge oval bulge in her neck (I assume crop) which massaging didn't seem to help. She also has a big wound area (approx 1" x 2") below and a little to the side of her vent. It looks like a shallow crater and looked a little wet when I first saw it but then she had a dirt bath and when I caught her and tried to clean it I found it to be a very hard, stiff surface that I couldn't clean with water.
The poop and wood shavings combo on the floor of their cage and the nesting area was up to 4 inches thick and rock solid.
