Seriously though we put up bird netting. I had considered shade cloth, but it's kinda pricey, and I was already waaay over budget on this project. I was initially concerned about coons chewing/tearing through the netting, but then I figured my peeps would be in their safe and secure coop at night, so if the coons chew through the netting at night, they'll come up with bupkus.

lol this is how we get the leaves out of our netting. Works great but scares the chickens half to death

I forgot to mention that I use 6 ft garden stakes to hold up the sag across large spans of bird netting. I do have a problem with leaves under the trees, so if I come into a buncha moolah, I might put welded wire up there someday.

If they are locked in a night, the deer netting is plenty. This will certainly keep hawks and owls out. raccoons, foxes etc. are usually around at night. My run has a 145ft perimeter, 5' high woven wire, with nothing on top. They are locked in at night. All the girls have survived so far.

I vote for hardware cloth. The problem I see with 2"x4" welded wire is that Ninja Rats and Nuclear Snakes can sqeeze through the holes. Don't know about the snow load, we don't get much of that in east Texas. Oops, I forgot about the Saber Tooth Squirrels.

After reading the threads on this post I find myself wonder why some of you don't hire on to build prisons in AZ?
