Should the Metronidazole be given more than once a day? I thought it was SID...
The AAAP manual says SID, but in my Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, 7th Edition, it says

  • Birds:
For susceptable infections (anaerobes; giardia):
a) 10-50 mg/kg PO q12h. (Oglesbee 2009)
b) Ratiites (not to be used for food): 20-25 mg/kg PO twice daily (Jenson 1998)

This is what I found when I looked for the Oglesbee 2009 reference:

I'm not a vet, so I can't say how often it should be given.

I need to go back and read all your recent posts. I have learned so much from this thread. THANKS.
He is BETTER. This morning he was feeling pretty bad. I gave him meds. By this afternoon he was up and much better. I dosed him again and he ate 5 pea size pieces of bananna that I put in his beak. I am now at work ,but just got a report from home that he was feeling well enough to fly up to perch on the sink and look at himself in the mirror.

I hope he continues to improve. Do you have any Safeguard (Fenbendazole)? If it is blackhead, you'll need to worm him. You might also want to stock up on more metronidazole. You can buy it without a prescription as Fish-Zole.

I have been holding my breath waiting on an update. I am soooooooooooooo happy that he is doing better. :ya

He is a very handsome boy. :love

I was looking for Fish-Zole around here the pet stores done have it. I will order some. I can get some safeguard tomorrow.
Will the horse paste work ok? I have given that to some peas before, I just was not sure. Should I keep giving the metronidazole twice a day or once. I have about 5 pills left. I will need to get more.

Did we ever do a list for meds that peas need? I can't remember if it was peas or turkeys or something else that you and I were on a thread talking about. Do you remember? Perhaps we should get another MED/First Aid kit/list so everyone will have it.

I think it's more important to give 5 days worth, so make them last. Are you giving 1/2 a pill twice a day or two whole pills twice a day?

I think that most people here use Safeguard for Goats/Cattle. The dose that my vet told me to use is 50mg/kg ( .5cc/kg) once by mouth and repeat in 10 days. PeaDaddy's vet told him to do it differently.
