Hi there. I work in a emergency veterinary practice in the Tri-state New York/New Jersey area. Someone surrendered in 8 week old chick. Looks like a pullet. I have 3 five to six-year-old hens at home. She's becoming very attached to us however we've had her only one day. I need some guidance. I'd like to give her to a local farm however difficult that may be or get a second chick similarin age. Anyone have any advice?

Ultimately she should have flock mates. You could try the slow intro to your existing flock. What kind of hens do you have? I wouldn't just toss her in, but keep her with them with a wire fencing type separation so they can get used to her and then gradually let her in with them with a place to get away/hide. My coop is actually cut right down the middle with a wire door and windows for this reason, for roosting and it works really well, they get used to each other and then out in the run and free-ranging they meet up where the bigs are less cranky. OR if you list/post a started pullet pretty much anywhere, someone will give her a good home. Certainly easier than finding a home for a cockerel. Hope it works out for you and her!!

Thank you so much. Yes, I spoke with a knowledgeable individual at a local chicken farm and she recommended just that. I have a large dog cage that I'm going to place in the run and have them get introduced that way. She's such a sweetheart! Thanks again!
This is Harper. Any ideas on her breed?

Oh shes SO pretty! I'm not great at breeds but does she have a teal sheen to her feathers? Maybe Olive Egger, or other barnyard mix. It'll be so fun to see what she turns out to be and what color eggs she lays! Hope it goes well for you and her!

UPDATE:
Harper is doing great!
I've kept her in during the night all last week and out in a large cage during the day. She has really bonded with us!
I let her out of her cage in the late afternoon to free range, and mingle with the my 3 older hens. They basically leave her alone or give her a little schooling-peck here and there. My problem is, I would like her to start sleeping in the coop but she refuses! She would much rather be inside with us.
Any tips on how to Integrate her into sleeping in the coop?

The cage you're using, does it fit inside the coop? If so, I'd cage her inside the coop at dusk, and let her out the next morning. A few days of that will hopefully help to show her that the coop is for nighttime.

This is the cage I use to transition my chicks into the coop (white squares are cardboard on top to catch any poop from hens above):

How cute! The cage she's in is too big but I have other cages. The last 2 nights I have physically put her in the coop and she hunkered down with the hens when I checked a few minutes later. She was actually sleeping under one of them. But she won't go in by herself. I had to wait until the pop door was about to close and I put her in and clos the d[r quickly, it was very dramatic and she did not want to be in there!😥
