That's sorta like what my Scots Dumpy male's wattles and stuff have been like!

I took eggs from my roo too, in case he gets infection and has to be culled. Almost his whole comb is black...and will probably fall off eventually. His wattles are very swollen and frostbitten as well. I've had him in the house for the past three days (on extra vitamins/ACV and cinnamon and putting bag balm on his comb) trying to see if he will get better. He also has something going on with his foot...but that isn't related to the frostbite. He is still eating and drinking fine though, so i am going to give him a chance to pull through before I decide whether or not to cull him. My birds are not pets, they are livestock, so taking one to the vet is *not* an option. It just doesn't make any sense to me to pay a $200 vet bill on a $7 rooster:>)

I talked with my mother and she is willing to pay for a vet visit/checkup, but not if this injury requires a major operation of some sort. Louie is a treasured pet to us, but if culling means putting him out of his pain, that's gonna be our decision.

That sounds like a sensible plan. I'd take him to a vet - you may want to explain that you would like to see what they can do with as minimal vet intervention as possible. Definitely looks infected. Maybe all that is needed is the correct anitbiotic.

Like, Holy waddles batman !!

I have never seen frostbite like these pics.
Usually the affected area will become putrid
and fall off. It is always a good idea to give
neosporine treatment and if it is a hard
frostbite a 10 day treatment of tetracycline.
For something this severe I would have to agree
that you need to get the penicillen. You will have
to inject this by steril method. If you do not know
how to administor by steril method look it up on
google.

A roo that can not find a warm place to stay at
night may not have any way to aviod this type
of injury.

Roos have been getting frostbite for eons.
Most make it till spring.

too much of a "good" thing is a bad thing... and in the case of garlic feeding it "straight" to an ill bird is ill advised (many recommend a clove of garlic in the water regularly as a "management" measure )

I do not think this is a case of frostbite.

I agree with you dlhunicorn that it does not seem like a simple case of frostbite. I just advised her to chop up and feed small pieces of garlic, which has been used by many chicken folks to help ward off infection and parasites.

...I
believe the risk is actually only when you feed the garlic to them ( vs putting in the water) as there is some research supporting the claims that there are some benefits... the trick is (seeing as how the beneficial element has not been isolated from the "toxic" elements) to ensure that that toxicity (in the form Dr. Wissman warns of in the article above) does not occur and I believe this is ensured when you do not feed it to them but simply put a clove in the water as preventive management measure.

I hope he gets better!!

Okay, an update everyone.... Louie has been drinking everytime we offer it to him. (He lays down alot because his wattles are so swollen and heavy.) We make him stand up and hold his wattles for him and put the aspirin water on a spoon so he can open his beak and drink. Yes or no to aspirin water?

Louie has a vet appointment this morning at 10:00. We are leaving at 9:30, so I'll be sure to post what the vet reccomends. We called and the vet visit is $36 alone. Mom says she's willing to pay up to $100 because this is the first major illness our birds have had in all the 13 years we've been raising them.

Thankyou dlhunicorn for replying to this thread and reading my PM.

Thanks to everyone else who has supplied me with helpful information. I know Louie wouldn't have made it through the night possibly if you guys hadn't helped.

Tiki, I'm sorry about the garlic thing. No way did I want to bring down your treatment possibility.
