I have a bird with similar swelling in the wattles and face. I am so glad that I found this thread!

I looked at the link that Diana gave, and that is what my chicken looked like. Also like Louie. I had assumed frostbite because of our insanely cold snap. This happened Friday evening, and I brought her in the house as soon as I noticed it. But she was not getting better. She was getting worse. I gave her Sulfa drugs in her water yesterday, but unfortunately, she wasn't drinking. So I soaked her kibbles in the medicine water and tempted her to nibble at the mash off my fingertips several times throughout the day.

She is much improved this morning! Thank you Diana! As always, your advice is good.

And thank you to everyone else for trying to help. BYC is such a wonderful community filled with really great people.

When I searched "swollen wattles" I found a lot of threads with that title. I hope that Louie, and all of the other birds that are suffering from this, makes a complete recovery. I know that we were at the point where we had to consider culling, but now we are hopeful.

Oh no Hannah! I'm so sorry about Louie! I hope the meds help and he doesn't die. Poor guy, he looks so miserable in the pics. I sure hope this isn't something that spreads to your other chickens.

If the BO hens are still laying, I think the eggs might still be fertile. I can try to incubate some for you if you need/want me too.

The girls haven't layed since Louie left. Mom says they miss him, but it's been getting really cold. I have a whole bowlful of eggs you can incubate. Mostly silkie, but we put a couple BO in the bowl. By the time my hatch is hatching, the eggs will be too old. You want them?

Sure, my poor incubator is out in the cold garage feeling neglected lol Think the eggs would be ok til this weekend?

I bet they do miss him. So he is hanging in there? Seeing any improvements?

I think the eggs will be fine. I think hatch percentage drops after 10 days, so this weekend should be okay. The vet said we or other people shouldn't visit our house cause what Louie has *may* be contagious, and I dont want it spreading to your own flock.

He's hanging in there. The swelling has gone down somewhat, but he hardly drinks or eats unless we hold a spoon up to his beak.

I think it should be ok if we just drive up to pick up the eggs. Its not like we would be out handling your chickens or anything. I could change clothes/shoes and wash up before going out to see my chickens later. I will PM you closer to the weekend and we can make plans then. I will hold onto the two Cochin pullets for you til you are sure your chickens are ok and you are ready for them.

When are the eggs you have in the incubator due to hatch, the 28th?

He's not eating or drinking because the frostbite is very painful. I have seen swollen wattles like that in frostbitten birds before.
Were he mine I'd dub him which would in all liklihood resolve the situation.
