HELP! Torn Crop!

Wow. The pictures are a lot worse than I would have thought. I would definately have a vet look at it. If you don't like your vet, take her elsewhere. An hour drive is well worth it to find a vet that takes good care of her.

If you are going to do it at home, I would empty the crop through the hole in it (use tweezers). Then sew the hole closed with a sterile needle (boil it) and some fishing line (also boiled). Then wash the wound well with water and a little (a drop or two of dish soap). I would even take her over to the sink and just run warm water all over and into the wound for a few minutes. Then dry everything well, and pluck the feathers from around the wound. I would superglue the wound closed with regular superglue (pinch wound closed drop of superglue on top and wait for it to dry, the wound and skin has to be dry for this to work).

I would start antibiotics ASAP, tonight even. And I would do the highest dose that is okay. And continue for at least two weeks.

Do not use tap water.
>you can use STERILE SALINE to flush the wound (boil 1/4 tsp salt in a quart of water for five minutes then cool ) dont drible or dab it on but put it in a (sterile) bottle (one which you can squeeze) and FLUSH that area for debris.

I am assuming you have no hibiclens (chlorhexidine which is advised in the wound management articles) so:
>Then mix iodine with sterile water ( boiled for five minutes)until the color of tea and squirt that onto the area.

Take her out of that rabbit hutch and put her in a (clean) cardboard box (or a CLEAN dog carrier >wash with bleach and rinsed THOROUGHLY afterwards ) on a clean towel not straw/hay (microwave the towel that the injury is coming into contact with >I am talking bout a teatowel here or a SMALL bath towel > put in a plastic bag and microwave it for two minutes if you can possibly do so) and then line that on top with paper towels (easy removal)...this is a cleaner environment than hay/straw in a rabbit hutch... (you want to avoid shavings/normal bedding as they can become stuck to the wound.)

My advice would be to take to a vet to get her stitched up... He will probably also use a combo of stitches and tissue glue but tissue glue is different than super glue which is toxic and the bird may have a reaction to that so if at all possible to get her to a vet then do so and remind the vet this is your PET which is why you are willing to spend the money! (you dont seem too enamored with your vet but stitches are atitches and he has the tissue glue which you do not and he can give you the proper antibiotics> I would ask him to give the bird a shot of BAYTRIL and you will need amoxcillin or such as followup to that )

Wow. Poor thing. It looks like it's full of straw or something it shouldn't be. I wouldn't glue it because it's a hole. I agree that it should be emptied something in there caused that hole. And a carrier with newspapers or a towel is definitely the way to go for a clean environment. Get her to a vet or even post on craiglist for an experienced farmhand if vet costs are an issue. Did you look at the crop surgery at the top of the forum? That might be what you need to do. But how do you knock them out for the procedure?
