Just curious, did anyone who told you they were red mites actually identify the mites in person? It certainly sounds like red mites, but Id'ing the mites would ensure the correct treatment.

My nephew asked me if he could use some of my property for chickens and I agreed. He abandoned them in August 2017, and I have been caring for them, reading books and researching online.

Sounds like Dear Nephew needs birthday and Christmas cards telling him that his gift - for the next ten years - will be the care of "his" chickens!
