This morning I found my chick with a red swollen vent?. I don't know if she's egg bound or prolapse or what. It is horrible and expands like a balloon and flops when she runs. I don't know if we need to quickly put her down or if she has a chance. If you know what this is please respond. She doesn't seem like she can poop well and is trying to lay an egg but my dog busted in the coop and scared her off her nest. I've quarantined her and soaked her in a tub of water for now.

It looks like a prolapse.

Get some honey or Preparation H or other haemorrhoid cream, give her another bath to make sure it is clean and then coat it in whichever of the above you have and very gently push it back inside her. Isolate her in a darkened box for several days with food and water which will prevent the others from pecking at it if it pops out again and the dark will also encourage her to stop producing eggs.... which will obviously cause it to come out again. It will take a few days for her to stop laying as there will be eggs already on the production line so to speak, so you will probably need to bath her and push it back in several times before it stays put and she stops laying. You may also find that she starts to moult because of being kept in the dark but that is not a bad thing as it will give her lots of time to heal before she recommences laying.

It's important to get that tissue lubricated and back inside her before it dries out as otherwise the tissue will die and the chances of recovery are then poor.

Good luck with her.

Barbara

I should add that if there is an egg in there as it appears there might be, gently lubricate it with KY jelly on a gloved finger to ease it out, before you push the prolapse back in.
