HELP!!!! URGENT!!!!!!

He is not making any progress at all. I fear he will die. I got Neosporin, wrapped him in wet paper towels, upped the humidity, had plenty of heat, but he just can't seem to unzip the shell. It is so upsetting...

I wonder whether an avian vet could save him? I'm sure they'd charge an arm and a leg, though, and it would be iffy.

Do you think I should go buy an incubator for him?

I know the feeling. Waiting for them to hatch is HORRID!!! Especially if they aren't doing anything.
While waiting.. You might want to read about helping chicks out of the shell. I think you can find it in the information section of this form and well as videos on youtube. Be careful if you do attempt to do it. There are risk to it.

Just know that if he does not make it, it might be for the best. If he is able to make it on his own, he will be stronger and healthier. If not, he might suffer anyway.

We are off to the Doc! She has saved a condor stuck in the shell like this. Sounds like she knows what she is doing and can tell whether he is viable, and they have an incubator!!! Worth a try, and the fee is right. Please keep the little chick in your prayers... Wise comments you made there, HickoryHollow. I appreciate your support very much.

Is it out yet? If not you could help it out. When momma hen is sleeping to night put the chick under her. She might peck you but She won't know the difference in the morning.

well that will be what I call an expensive chick if you have to have the vet hatch it.

Personally I would have tried to have made it's hole a bit bigger before going to the vet and see if that would help any. If it didn't then I would have realized that mom had a reason to not want the egg around. If a mother hen feels as though something is wrong. it normally is best to leave well enough alone.

No, you are wrong, Hildar. The charge was only $22.00. Totally worth it for my own peace of mind. If the chick died after I tried to help, I would blame myself. If the chick dies with the vet's help, I will know I couldn't have saved it, if she couldn't do so. And I will know I did everything possible to help it, without botching it myself without having the adequate medical training, experience, and expertise. She has worked in a zoo and was seaing the Aquarium's Sea Turtle also, today. She also saved a dove in its egg, in addition to a condor. This was not a normal hatch, Hildar. It was a staggered hatch. Three different sets of eggs. A hen often abandons the remaining-to-hatch eggs once the first staggered eggs hatch and present her with needy little chicks to care for. Thank God for medical professionals in crises like these.

Also, Hildar, if I had left well enough alone at the last hatch, I would not have my beautiful 2 1/2 year old rooster, Baby. He is Lemon Blue, gorgeous, and full of fun. His StepMama tried to peck him to death when he hatched because he was rambunctious. She would have killed him had I not rescued him and raised him in the house. He would trill like a songbird and sit on top of my head. That bird has brought me hours of pleasure and eye candy. I thought the same as you did-- there must be something wrong with him for her not to like him-- but that wasn't the case. I took him to the vet at 6 months of age, and he said he was in picture perfect health, and a very good boy. I don't regret intervening for one second, even if it was rather inconvenient at the time. Totally worth it!!!!

I think it is awesome you have access to a Vet that only charged you 22 bucks. That is an expensive peep, but I totally get where you are coming from as far as peace of mind. God bless that Vet!

So, you still haven't said.....is the peep hatched or still pending?

Well it's still an expensive chick figuring I can hatch out another one in the incubator for free, or pick one up through craigslist for $3. Like I said it's what we call an expensive chick. Shoot if I spent $22 on every chick that I have I wouldn't have all my chickens. Even though I do have a few $100 chicks. but they are expensive show birds.

I worked for a vet for 20 years as his assistant I know when I should give up, and when it's ok to help a little. We had a staggered hatch last year, My hen knew when the last one that was good hatched she still waited 3 more days then rolled the last 3 eggs around, and realized they were no good. My neighbor insisted they would still hatch and she took them about 4 hours later one exploded in her living room, and before she could get the mess all cleaned up the other 2 exploded. Luckily it wasn't my house that was stinking like rotten eggs.
