Help... we can't figure out what this beauty is...

The fact that you had an older rooster might have kept this guy from crowing. Now that he's the only guy, he feels free to sing his heart out!

The barred rock looks like she is either laying or close. The red bird doesn't have much comb yet, so I'm thinking eggs are not really close from her.

You might try confining the barred bird to a coop for a few days and see if you get eggs. When I free ranged, it was about 50/50 hens laying in the coop and laying out and about. I had to go on egg hunts every few days........part of the reason I now no longer free range.

The kids got all of them as chicks in the spring. I would say 5-6 months by now. We lost the 1 rooster and everyone else is fine. i wondered about them hiding nests. yes we do have a way to lock them up. as a matter of fact they return to it everynight.

You can go to my blog at cackleberryfun.blogspot.com to see some silver-laced wyandotte's. That black and white pattern is called barring. If it's a barred rock, that is excellent markings! That Roo of your's could be valuable with it's blue undertones.

So if they aren't laying they should be soon, the barred one does look like she is really close if she is not already, the red bird looks a ways away yet since she doesn't have much comb/wattle development. If you don't want to lock them up all day, you could lock them up in the morning/ early afternoon before the girls would lay, then let them out in the afternoon and see if you can follow them to a hidden nest.
The barred bird looks like a Barred Plymouth Rock, the red might be a Rhode Island Red, but there are a lot of red breeds, and the hatcheries sell a lot of red mixes under names like Production Red or Cherry Egger etc that look alike.

Since this is also an FFA project for my son what do you mean by valuable and how do we find out?

I thought the black & white one was a Plymouth Rock.

Plymouth rocks and barred rock are ths same thing. Thee are barred plymouth rocks people just call barred rocks for short and their are white plymouth rocks that people just call white rocks for short.

Future reference.
Pullet=female under 1 year
hen=female over a year
cockerel=male under 1 year
cock/rooster=male over a year old

Their are lots of abbrevations and terms to learn on here!

I wanted to thank all of you for the help. I am finding this website to be extremely helpful to me. I will post more pics this week on my days off, but my husband went to the swap meet this weekend and when I got home from work our little flock has grown. I believe If my count is right, we now have 1 female Pekin duck, 1 male magpie, 1 easter egger cockerel, 4 easter egger pullet's, 1 barred rock, 2 rhode island reds(?),1 black silkie (my husband thinks it's his favorite), and I think one more that I am forgetting or have not determined. currently all seem to be getting along well, the cockerel and I may have to have a meeting of the minds (lol). He loves to roost in the tree instead of the coop and seems to be a bit of bully sometimes. I do gain a large amount of entertainment from watching them in may yard though, and have found it to be an excellent stress reliever considering I have such a stressful job.
Thanks again for all advice and input.
