Help! Weird egg!

I also have Cayuga ducks, and I can verify that the black can be washed off. :)
That's why I assume that Cayuga eggs get lighter over time, less pigment in the bloom the more they lay.

Yep that's exactly right. The first egg of every laying season should be darker. The bloom is what's dark and will wash off. As the season goes along the eggs should lighten in color. Also if a Cayuga isn't a purebred the eggs will be closer to a white.
