Help! weird red thing hanging out of my ducks bottom

OK that was not too bad. I was not sure I could catch him or get him into the sink but it worked out. We soaked for a few and then I tried antibiotic ointment which did not stick so then I tried petroleum jelly and he is isolated in a box. Yikes. so what will happen if this does not fix him up? I really don't think I want to pay for a vet bill......
thanks for all of the help!!!

More times than not, it will have to be cut off. It is usually rare in large breed ducks and common in bantam ducks. Sometimes with isolation and ointment, he can "pull it back in" and keep it there. But he needs to be separated so he doesnt try to breed.
Daphne's website has a lot of great info on it.

I got him all fixed up, but I don't have a way to separate him for weeks. what if I set him loose on a nearby pond? wouldn't the water help his problem???

NO! DO not let him "loose an a pond". It is a death sentence and not prudent.

Get a small dog containment pen, usually about $30 or get one for cheaper on Craigslist, etc.

The heavier breeds cannot fly, so a 30" high pen would be fine. You can locate it near the others so he doesn't feel isolated, but keeps him "in check".

OK I will keep him contained, but why would it be a death sentence? Seems like he would have a happy life with other ducks and the water would help his "noodle" problem....

Also, how long should I keep him contained before I find a new home for him? (seems I have too many males vs. females)....

Well for one thing wild ducks can fly and that makes it easier for them to avoid predation, your runner can't fly so he would be an easy target when on dry ground. They don't live on the water all the time. Plus he is use to being taken care of there he would have to find food and most likely could starve. Let me go and find the link someone at a refuge/rehab posted about domestic ducks being let loose in the wild.
