I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Constantly worrying is not helping you. I do understand, I watch mine all the time - I do study my birds and see what normal behavior is for that individual so hopefully I catch something early. Unfortunately, laying hens have reproductive issues - it's not to dismiss the problem, it stinks it really does, but for me, it's something I have come to recognize and accept if I am to keep laying hens, then this is going to be part of it.
Managing parasites is important, ensuring everyone is eating/drinking well, keeping their stress levels relatively low and that housing is fairly clean is often the best thing you can do.
