A friend sent me a message this morning asking me to contact one of her friends who has a chicken who has been eggbound for more than 24 hours. She's done warm water baths with epsom salt and is giving tums and the egg is visible, but won't come out. She can get her finger in and has applied KY jelly and PrepH at various points, but it won't come out.

A while back I saw an article with pictures on how to remove the egg and I can't find that. Can anyone help me out with that? She is trying at this point to make a hole in the egg but the shell is rock solid and isn't having success with that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

She needs some calcium. Does your friend have Tums? I'd give her one, if need be cut it into smaller pieces and give it to her.
Usually those help a lot, they strengthen the contractions and give that extra boost to get it out.
I've never had luck with just soaking, they really need the calcium too.

Don't make a hole in the egg, that can cause it to break inside the hen which is very very bad, as you can almost never get everything out. Then the stuff that remains in there gets infected, and I'm sure you can guess how difficult that is to deal with.

She's giving her tums. I don't like to break shells either because they can slice them up inside if they have sharp edges.

So far no luck.

How many has she given? I'd keep giving them if she's still not passing it.

Is the hen still eating/drinking at all?

Oh, have her chop the tum in half and put it right in her beak. She can swallow it, chickens are capable of swallowing some big stuff.
Then have her give the other half after she swallows.
The other day when ya'll helped me with my egg bound hen I couldn't not get her to swallow a whole tum so I broke it into little pieces and put it in her water and food and she must of gotten it in her food because by the time I came out with Epsom salt water there was the egg!

The vet told her to crush the egg and the chicken will pass it so she broke it. Not good advice, IMO, but too late now. I told her the shell can cut her up inside and to be careful. She is trying to remove it.

That's not good. :hmm
There are a lot of vets who really know nothing about birds at all.
Hopefully she will be ok anyway though.
