Well that would be a great idea IF you can get the hen to eat it. When mine was suffering with the doughy crop issue she was barely eating at all so much less would she eat this with all those spices in it. But perhaps your hen will eat it. I honestly think though that it would be best to tube in and just get it all in because eating a little here and a little there probably won't get enough in her at one time to do the job. But that's just my opinion on this. I know this recipe TOTALLY cured my hen of a horrible case of doughy crop so I highly recommend using it. I wish you the best of luck with your hen! Let us know how it goes.

I would like to caution everyone about adding a acid ( insert lemon juice here ) and a base ( insert baking soda here ) and then shaking vigorously in a closed container. It could result in a high gas pressure release by container failure and spew spice mix all over the kitchen in places you do not want to have to get to to clean it up. Cayenne pepper / ginger / cinnamon / baking soda and lemon juice feel wonderful in your eyes as you scramble to get your eyes under the faucet water . Ask me how i know.

Mix this up in an open container and stir until the CO2 from the baking soda / lemon juice reaction has subsided. Then you can put a top on and shake to your hearts desire. Or put it in a magic bullet as i did to get it thoroughly mixed.

Just a heads up.

Hi guys! I know this is an old thread but I’m dealing with a similar issue and would really love some advice right now. My chicken Matilda has been having crop issues for a week now. I noticed when she was pooping basically nothing but water and her crop was bulging. I thought it was an impacted crop so I isolated her and stopped feeding her and I added Apple cider vinegar to her water. Yesterday I bought her stool softeners because I read they can help soften the impacted food in the crop. She’s had 5 50mg tablets in the last 17 hours or so. No change yet. I put them in plain yoghurt to disguise them and it works pretty well.
I’ve also been giving her several crop massages a day. Nothing is helping so far. After reading this I wonder if it’s a doughy crop I’m dealing with. The crop kneeds like dough. The only reason she’s not eating is because I’m not feeding her because I didn’t want to add to the impacted crop. She will eat if I allow her too. The thing is her poop is still just water with speckles of green so obviously what ever is in her crop isn’t moving through so am I still doing the right thing by not feeding her? I’ve made the lemon bicarbonate soda and spice mix and she’s drinking that without me having to force feed it to her. I did add some of the chicken feed to it though to make it more appealing to her. She ate it pretty quickly. Can anyone offer me any advice on what else I can do? I saw that you said to give her probiotics but that’s why I’m giving her yoghurt. Do you think that’s enough? Any help is much appreciated! Thank you
