Help with our Dominque Birdzilla

Quote:
That's a Barred Rock rooster. There's no way it could be a hen with that comb, and it looks like the saddle feathers and tail are starting to look roo-ish as well.

Many folks call ANY barred bird a dominique. This bird has a straight comb, so not a dom. I don't think it's a pure barred rock, though, the pattern really looks more cuckoo than barred. I'd love to see speckledhen or someone else who really knows barred rocks input. I'm kinda leaning toward black sex link cockeral, but don't know if momma was a rock or a marans.

looks kinda like our barred rock Pepper. She is a lovely bird and lays large brown eggs. (top left)

mother o' chicks72 :

that's BR roo, not a dom, not a hen. sorry.

that is a hen. look at the neck, non existant saddle feathers, and tail feathers

I just looked at the comb pic and now im not totaly comvinced either way. in that pic it looked like saddle feathers were starting but it was hard to see. I still bet on hen

I bet roo...might be a bit too young for the pointy saddle feathers to come in, but the way they are hanging over the tail and the tail set says roo to me. COloring is kind of in between lighter male and darker female. Defnitley NOT a cuckoo marans, and not a pure Dom with that comb. Maybe the person who sold him didn't know any better. Or maybe a dom/br cross.

He is just a cross, most likely a Barred Rock cross but he is not pure Barred Rock nor is he a American Dominique.
I will say that some people will consider any "Barred" fowl a Dominique, as in the Dominique pattern.
That includes; Barred, Cuckoo, Crele and variations in between.

Here is some pictures of pure American Dominque Hens.
