Help With Pawprint ID?

I would either SSS before I even put the chickens out,or make a casual remark to the neighbor that you saw prints around your coop and can't wait to get whatever is coming on your land.Easier to SSS and no hard feelings that way. I agree that you should not have to spend the money to keep other peoples animals off your land.

I tried to catch a little dog yesterday(collar/tags),but it ran across the road before I could grab the collar. No harm done except making my mini pin crazy(we are totally fenced). Now had the dog gotten INTO my yard and attacked my dogs or chickens...well I would not be so kind.Cute dog,but it could have caused accidents and/or killed someones pet. It hung out at my neighbors across the road.Shameful that no one was looking for it.My dogs would definitely leave the yard if they could.I am glad they have not learned to climb!

My dogs are small and inside most of the time. If they are out, one of us is out with them. My property is fenced and I keep my gates closed. My dogs do not roam the neighborhood.

My front fence is only 4' tall, so larger dogs have no problem jumping over it. One dog my neighbor previously had would actually climb it like a ladder to get over it. That dog was aggressive and would likely have ended up getting shot had he not got rid of it.

I have thought about increasing the height of the fence, but don't want to turn my place into a fortress and can't afford the expense anyway.

I'll talk to him the next time I get a chance. I'm hoping that he gets rid of the dogs, as they have been out a few times already harassing livestock. I can't be the only one who is annoyed.

SSS is an option, although I don't enjoy it. Sometimes there is no other choice.

Your neighbor sounds nuts. There are too many good dogs in the world that need homes. Why would someone get unsafe dogs, and then on top of that, let them loose?! If they attack livestock, what will prevent them from attacking family dogs, cats, children, or even you! Anyone like that is not going to care about you or your chickens. Get a big, strong fence or electric wire and keep them and everything else out and enjoy your chickens... And then report him. It is illegal to allow dogs to roam.

He has a long history of having loose dogs. He had a basset hound that roamed every day for 10 years. More recently, he has been getting large dogs. Over the past few years he has had a brown lab, a couple of black labs and now these two huge dogs.

I could not believe that the shelter would allow known livestock killers to be adopted, especially when the person adopting them lives in an area with lots of livestock. Maybe I'll call Animal Control and ask why it would even be allowed.

Sounds like a good idea to call animal control. Yup. Nuts...I have had the same Shepard for 14 years. She was heck bent on getting out when we got her from the shelter. I spent so much time and money on fencing, but my choice as a dog owner was to keep her in or get rid of her. She and the lab are great protectors of our horses and chickens. They would never hurt even a chick. Good luck.

There is always another choice. Its called calling Law Enforcement. Do not shoot dogs!!! It is not their fault they have bad owners. People always talk about someone else's dogs and shooting them but if it was their own dog, and fence or not your dog could get out, they would be calling law enforcement in a hurry.

I guess that depends on the effectiveness of Law Enforcement where you live. Years ago, AC would not even respond out here in the county unless it was a rabies case. They are better now, but they certainly aren't going to respond at 3AM on a Saturday or whatever.

I guess I have seen first hand the damage dogs can do to livestock. Here in Texas you have every right to protect your livestock from being attacked including shooting.I know and understand how hard it is to keep a dog confined to their own property LOL I have a blue heeler who given the chance will make her rounds here in town. If on one of her rounds she was shot I would be liable for any damage she did. NO I would not get upset over her being shot....I have gone to extreme measures to make sure she will not leave but nothing is fool proof. Same goes for my horse if one of them got out its my responsibility to pay for any and all damages.
It comes down to taking RESPONSIBILITY for your animals. Any hunting animal will harm livestock given a chance.
