Help With Sick Pekin

ohsnapitscharity - I can't offer you any duck advice as you are already one step ahead of me... you have a duck. However, I can say that you are being a really good ducky parent. You are trying everything you can given the resources you have.

Keep in mind, one part of being a parent is knowing when to get help for a sick child. While I don't have a ducky baby, I do have a child and as a parent I've had to make the decision to ask someone else for help.

You are the parent in this situation and you need to keep asking yourself if you need to call the rescue for advice or even consider loving your duck enough to give him to someone else who can care for him. He sounds like he is improving, but keep asking yourself so you can remain confident that you are doing what is best for him.

We're cheering for you and your duck. So keep it up.

so thats alwas a good sign...may go out there one more time and rinse him with warm water and a rag tonight.

i think the worst part about all this is it kinda makes me worried that if i want to get more ducks from someone local who is on here they wont want me to own any because of Peeps mishap...may not be true but its all i can think...(not the worst part but you know it worries me)

Well it is obvious you want the best for your pets.

To start with, go to the Coops section and read up on the best way to predator proof your pen and how big it needs to be. That will go along way to making sure your place is the best for a duck to live in!
You don't want the rats coming back! Do you have a light on out there?

Is it possible the rats were eating all his food?
If he is eating he is hungry so that might be the case.
Until you get the run predator proofed with hardware cloth and make sure there is no place for rats to get in, I would keep feeding your duck like you are now. A little at a time and mixed with water like he is eating it now. It will ensure he is the one getting the food and you spending time with him will keep him from being lonely until you get him a friend.

Be sure not to make more than he can eat at once as feed spoils quickly.

Keep us updated!

Don't sweat that. Everyone on here knows about the mishap, everyone also knows how darn hard you are working to set it right. If making mistakes meant we lost the right to be parents... there would be a LOT fewer kids :) Keep trying, keep learning, and don't give up... you're duck isn't. Get him through this and then look into finding him a friend.

Thanks! I've already spotted a local rescue who has a pair of muscovies right now. Someday I'll be working as hard as ohsnapitscharity to keep the ducks healthy.

Good to hear that his digestive system is working. That new food your grandmother bought should be good for him. Next time you give him corn as a treat, make sure he has access to grit if you haven't already. Grit are small stones that the duck's gizzard uses to grind coarse food up. If free ranging, a duck will usually get grit from the dirt. If in a cage, this must be provided by you in a separate bowl.

In case you are wondering, I buy my grain from the feedmill in a powder form, called a mash. That is usually the cheapest feed avaiable. I mix it with water because it is too fine and dusty for them to eat without constantly running over to the water bowl to wash it down. A lot of feed gets wasted at the bottom of the water bowl that way. So, by mixing it with water beforehand they don't have to keep running over to the water bowl as much, and they are able to fill up their crop rather quickly. Since it is cool up here in the upper part Michigan, the mixture doesn't spoil quickly as it would in South Carolina. If it spoiled, the ducks could die from the toxins produced during spoilage.

Ok so I was going to wait until later to update but I'm so excited I'm just going to update from my phone. I went outside this morning and for the past few days I've been leaving dry food out overnight just in case he decides to touch it. Well the bowl was empty! At first I was scared something else ate it but I went and refilled the bowl and he ran right to it and started chowin down! His appetite is back to normal! Will say more around 2:00 my time. I was just so excited I had to share.
