I had a young/inexperienced hen come off the nest too early with 4 chicks. The chicks all looked and acted healthy and energetic. It turned cold (65 degrees or so). I left for work and they all seemed fine. When I got home she was covering one but the other 3 were stretched out on the ground, not moving and gasping for breath. I brought them inside and placed them under a heat lamp. Initially they began to improve but 1 ended up with a weak ankle and walks on the side of its foot. One laid with its legs hyper-extended behind its body and never regained use of its legs. The third one completely recovered after a few days.
Could one of the legs be dislocated?
Does she just lay on the one side? If you roll her over, how does she act?
To be honest with you I'm new to raising chickens myself. I don't have any babies at this time; I have 2 four months old, about 10 -year and a half olds and the rest are over 3 years old.
We looked her over better just now. She appears to be tender on her back. She's gasping for air still. She seems to be tremoring or shaking with rapid heart beating against my hand when held. My sister in law just looked at her as well. She thinks back may be broke. She's not sure of gasping but said to look that up.
