We live in Michigan. I guess we are spoiling them. I just thought they needed it one way it started to get cold

Mine do fine into negative temperatures. I have had birds get a little frost bite but nothing too serious.

How long have the younger birds had access to the main coop and run?
Are the youngers going into the coop to lay in the coop nests?
Do the hens only guard the door at roosting time?

Nope, they sure don't.
Heat lamps are unnecessary and dangerous!
