Why does my rooster imitate the egg song when he hears it?

Well, because it isn't an egg song, it's an escort call. He is calling back to the girl who just laid an egg to let her know where the flock is and/or that he is coming to escort her back.
It’s so cool how chickens communicate. The more you sit & watch & listen the more you’ll recognize their vocals. They have their own language. They’re so entertaining
