RIP Domino.

Not sure just what happened, but heard an odd flapping and she was dead in the run with Willie and a hen pecking at her. This was early this morning after I let them for their scratch and as I was cleaning the coop.
Might have been a skirmish and she bolted into fence and broke her neck or had a heart attack or maybe a mating mishap.
She was the sweetest and my favorite for her mellowness and beauty...and one of the few still laying. Damnit.. SMH

aww , tough break, Art.
Chickens will often peck at a distressed bird.
It must be something left over from their
prehistoric beginnings; or confusion .
she sure was pretty.. I had two like that .
a friend liked them so much that I finally told her if she could catch them she could take them. and she did..

It's a shame when it's your favorite
And when it's a good layer

Yeppers, that was part of my thought process.
Have never lost a bird like this, am a bit pissed off.. still wonder what exactly happened but am stuck with the visual of Willie tugging hard at the comb on her floppy dead head, don't know if he was responsible for her demise in a pecking order or mating scuffle, or just reacting to her death throes(the flapping I heard). That wing flapping is what made me go out and look, I must have recognized the cadence of it.

Check her heart

Check her heart
Didn't have the heart(pun intended) to open her up, rough few weeks here.
I don't know if I could have recognized a faulty/failed heart.
I did check her over for bugs(none) and wounds(none),
couldn't tell if neck was broken or regular floppy death neck.
As much as I like to know all the details, the why and how, the older I get the more accepting of 'not knowing' I've become.

Yes I am getting the same way.... doesn't really matter what happened... not much can be done about any of the suspected issues

Exactly!
I do wish I had complete and recording cam coverage
(I have no cams-haha!),
so I could see what happened.
There's been more than the usual scuffling going on lately,
broody mama with chicks integrated a couple weeks ago,
and I've seen Willie do some nasty stuff.
Like go full feet out tackle on mama and rougher than usual mating with other birds,
he's not the best cockbird I've had.

Annie asked me if I wanted to go along with her to have her hair colored. 1 1/2 to 2 hours ??
No thank you.
I finally am getting to work on the AC frame.
The saw is working just fine.
I have the bottom boards ready to glue..
No sun today, but it is still hot and humid.
I am taking a break and drinking a large mug of ice water.
the corn, beans and tomatoes are growing.
I didn't check on the squash. I assume it is up, though.
Cap, your new coop looks fine.

Thanks, not bad for mostly free or cheap materials.
