I have some pallets you can have if you are ever driving through this area.
today I made a batch of cinnamon, caramel pecan rolls. I will be having some with my coffee in the morning. If GS doesn't eat all of them..
Had to go to town right in the middle of mixing them up.. My yeast was not proofing.
Got new yeast . all turned out well.
now I have a hankering for potato pancakes.

Pass the sweet rolls please! I have yet to make a bread by hand that I was happy with but the closest was cinnamon rolls. Just tossed out all of our yeast since it was all too old. I should have picked up fresh when I was shopping today.
 
I buy the small jars of granulated yeast. I store it in the freezer. This jar was a couple of years old I think. I forgot how long ago I bought it.
to test it, mix a spoonful of sugar into a half cup of water. sprinkle the yeast into the mixture. let it set for a few minutes. If it starts to foam up, it is good to go. If you let it go for awhile, it will climb right out of the cup..
Hot water will kill the yeast. 100F is OK.
When I worked in the donut shop, I could just feel the water temp. If it "bit" it was too hot..

Thanks Jim, I have lots of pallets and lots available in the area. Zero chance I would make it up your way, I have too many critters to care for.
 
Bread takes practice, I've eaten a lot of funky loaves.
I make all my bread and use the foil packets of dry active yeast.
Nothing fancy just basic half WW half white with soaked cereal grains mixed in.
Sometimes I mess around with buns, or epi loaf, or pizza flats.

If you want a real funky loaf, just forget to put the salt in the dough. BTDT
I worked at Dixie Creme donuts, Wonder Bread bakery, and at Super Value bakery.
I learned a few things ..
what I like about ho-made bread is the texture.
I really left a mess for myself to clean up.
I got er all done, spic and span, this morning.
there is some good wood in them thar pallets. it takes a long time for some of them to rot.

Yeah, I think some of the pallets are hardwood.
