I planted some vinca today in the flower bed . It's in the middle of the circular driveway.
Cleaned about 3/4 of the goat pen inside the coop, but unfortunately, where I wanted to dump the manure for my new veggie garden has grown up with weeds and small bushes already. So I pulled 2, 5 gallon buckets of weeds and tossed them in the goat area.
I put hardware cloth on one side of the new run, as an apron. Plan to run chicken wire all the way around the welded wire fence because some of the small chickens can squeeze through and get lost. Asked hubby to help me move the playhouse into the run so the chickens can stay in there until I get the big coop built.
And my mums are blooming way early again!

Apparently I will be trying out water cups to go with my water nipples.

DH went to an estate/moving sale and picked me up a GIGANTIC plastic hanging feeder, a bunch of wire egg baskets, and a dozen or so new, never-used watering cups.

I double-washed the cups just like my own dishes and have put all the other things in a sunny place on the other side of my yard from the chickens. Tomorrow I will scrub them down, bleach them, and then I will leave them in the sun and weather for a week or two to take advantage of the natural disinfectant power of UV light.

hi all, well, we got rain. a full day of light calm soaking rain. perfect. A large system passes by. We were right on the edge of it. No hail, or wind. 30 miles to the south of they had 1 -1/8 inch hail stones.. that's a golf ball..
my lettuce is up already. the beans should be coming up today or tomorrow. the beets should be coming up about July 1..
I am not so impressed with the raised strawberry beds. I think I planted them too late. Will see how they do as the summer wears on. They are everbearing.
I haven't checked on the asparagus. I imagine I will have to do some backfilling..
Wausau is bringing in a herd of goats for clearing the brush off of the island in the middle of town. IDK, they are making such a production of it. Just do it already.. I hope they realize the goats are indiscriminate eaters.. LOL

This heat is old already. Quit going to swaps, just too hot for the birds and I. Yesterday I put up about 50 feet of chicken wire along the fence to the barnyard, just to keep smaller birds in. Not going to keep out predators, chicken wire won't do that.
I hope to get together enough energy to finish tacking up the welded wire fencing on the run. Then I will be able to put youngsters in there and not worry about putting them up every night or letting them out in the morning.

I can't handle this heat. I have been getting up early and working until about 8AM.
As of this morning I am done planting trees. I planted the three cherries that were in totes. One of the trees really put out a lot of roots in the tote. The other two just held status quo. They will do better in the ground.
Container tomatoes got out of hand again. I have 10 in containers going great guns, but I somehow have acquired a dozen still in pots that need to go into containers. How do I do that to myself ???
I have to "borrow" some more potting dirt from the kids' supply behind the garage.
we are getting plenty of rain with the hot days. I have not watered for two weeks.

I'm looking into some southern-bred cherries that are supposed to bear in Zone 8 (I'm almost precisely on the border between 7b and 8a -- by less than a mile). I love cherries but they don't love the south.

I wish we had some good, soaking rain -- though not until after dark tonight because I'm going to run the lawn sweeper and DH is working on the Chicken Palace.

I had requested that the rain hold off until midnight, but it's pelting down so hard now that the tv went off.
I got the last of the welded wire on the end of the new run, put a handle on the door and a hasp. Also finished putting up chicken wire on one side of the barnyard. Ran out of zip ties , so I need to get more.
I have started building a nest box for a friend of mine that likely has more chickens than I do, but doesn't have a single nest box. Her chicken math is out of control. I have been teaching her to use tools and she is coming along. Loves my compressor and pneumatic stapler for attaching hardware cloth. I took it with me on the last visit I made to her place. To make matters worse, she is always low on funds so we are using as much recycled materials as we can.

Having a lot of birds makes one low on funds.
