I am totally fed up with bees and snakes! Got stung on two different days, the most recent one is still red and swollen.
I lost one of my favorite pullets to a snake. It killed her and then tried to swallow her , but naturally couldn't. Tonight I went out around midnight and there was a snake wrapped around the perch, and it struck at my full sized hen before I could grab it! So I am going to have to start closing pop doors every night. Really pissed off.

we don't have large snakes. none that I know of that will take a chicken. Once, a few years ago I saw one that was longer than my pick up truck is wide. In retrospect, I think it was a python that somebody turned loose. If not, it was a record breaking pine snake.
I do not get along with snakes. I would never grab one. maybe the small grass snakes, but nothing over a foot long..
My resident doe is leaving the raised beds and tomatoes alone, so far. the other afternoon while I was sitting on my chair and watering the tomatoes, she came up to 20 feet behind me. I didn't know she was there. I startled her when I stood up.
we now have two stray cats. they have wiped out all of the red squirrels and chipmunks. There are at least 3 different cotton tails. maybe more. maybe between the two of them they will get the rabbits, too.

Playhouses just are not big enough, but it may do until I get the coop built.

Cozy,
we are going through an air quality alert. Smoke from Canadian fires are making it very hazy. Like early morning fog, all day. It burns my eyes.
Hot here otherwise. in the 80's. No rain for a week. keeping up with the watering , OK.
I am thinking of reclaiming the old grape arbor. A couple of years ago I pulled out the stakes and wires. They were all pulled down from the vines anyhow.
Now the vines are all lying on the ground in a tangled mess. This will not be just a one day job, for sure..
The raised beds and container tomatoes are doing fine. The resident doe has not nibbled,,,,,so far.
She walked up behind me when I was sitting on my chair and watering the tomatoes. I startled her when I stood up.
The new grapes are doing fine. A couple are to the top wire on the trellis. I topped them off.
the bare root trees are not showing me much . They are just holding their own. I hope they are at least forming roots..
Now we have another stray cat. Those two have wiped out the red squirrels and chipmunks. We still have at least 3 rabbits..Time will tell.

I have the hazy sky and yesterday I could smell smoke, but nothing like what you have.

Cappy, smoke from Canada ? Wow, that is a long way .
We had a nice rain a couple of nights ago. That cleared the air. I told Annie that it was a good nutritious rain, Nitrogen and Potash.
today my eyes and nose are running and I am sneezing a lot.
I mowed some grass early this morning. Was going to do some more after lunch. Nope, 85F and sunny. Can't handle the sunny..

Actually, Canada is not really far from VA, compared to when we lived in FL. Hubby plans to drive up there in August. Of course, I am staying home to care for the animals.
