The chick make this big hole. I sprayed the membrane with a tad bit of water but had to leave the school. I hope it’ll be okay until i can get back in the morning. Would something like aquaphor work as well?

Did you remove the shell over the air cell, or did the chick do that?

They can take up to 24 hours before they start to zip, so he might not be ready to hatch until tomorrow morning. I would definitely put something like coconut oil, bacitracin, or Neosporin on the membrane to keep it from drying out.[/QUOTE

I'm not familiar with Aquaphor, so I'm not sure.

I'd go ahead and follow the directions in that article. If the chick did the big hole on its own, it might be stuck and trying to hatch. I would check it in the morning and help it if needed.

My bad, I googled it and there are other Vaseline type products. But I’m not familiar with it. Sorry.

So i came back to the classroom this morning and still no progress. I did peel the egg off where the membrane was dry and sprayed some water. I didn’t assist too much and he/she is officially hatched!! I’m over the moon!

Congrats!!

In the future use an ointment or coconut oil instead of water for moisturizing membranes, water dries up pretty quickly.
