hen attacked by dog

What a great idea. I have two teenage boys that would love some target practice. And a teenage girl that would also. Maybe some nice bright orange paintballs. Yes, that sounds about right.

Hydrogen peroxide should only be used to clean wounds the first time. It is very harsh and destroys new cells growth, at least in humans. But it is great at destroying the bacteria from the bite if the wound is not too deep.

Shoot the dog with a paintball gun. Sends a nice message to the owner, and non-lethal.

We've used hydrogen peroxide, but I have heard that it isn't the best. You don't need a prescription for Terramycin, they have it at most feed stores. We get it at Tractor Supply Company and always have it and Blu Kote around for emergencies. I suggest that once you find it, get enough to last until the hen heals and then double it. Hopefully you won't have to use it, but you never know.
Don't shoot the dog with a paintball gun! It will make the owners angry, which could result in police being called, the dog staying loose (the owners probably won't respect you/want to keep your chickens alive if you hurt their dog), or who knows what else. You should tell the neighbors that the bird that was attacked was a very valuable bird (even if it isn't

) and also warn them that their dog could get hit by a car. In some places it is illegal for dogs to be "free-range"; if it is where you live, tell them that. It isn't the dog's fault, don't hurt the dog unless it is actually attacking a chicken and you need to to make it stop. I actually feel sorry for dogs running around free - they could get hit by a car or something because they happen to have ignorant owners.

I have considered calling the animal shelters when dogs are running loose, but I know their officers would never show up in time to catch the dogs. The dogs don't stay around long enough, and I am afraid to catch them. They're always wary of people. We've had a Husky, yappy terriers, and White Labs and some black-and-brown dogs show up out of the blue. You never know when, which makes free-ranging impossible.

My paintball idea is for people who can't use a firearm on their property. Just don't let anyone see you shoot the dog with it. Me,,, I use an AR15 with hollow point bullets and a kioti tractor with a front end loader for burial. Predators killing livestock is not acceptable on our property.

I used a paintball gun on cats and dogs even before I got chickens. This is my yard and I don't want other peoples animals peeing and pooping in it. Most of the time I miss, I'm not a very good shot. But the noise of the gun scares them away.

Even if they don't see you shoot their animal, someone could call the news reporters and call for an investigation... News stations in my part of the country love to do this type of story, because everyone relates to animals.

I wouldn't risk it, myself.

Couldn't you accidentally injure them if you shot them and got in their eyes?

Sometimes trying to send a message will get you in trouble...... So I'll say forget about the paint ball and shut the **** dog with a 9mm and burrie it in your back yard, that way nobody knows nothing and as far as you are concerned the dog got lost.... JUST KEADIN.....DONT TAKE ME SERIOUS....Probably your best bet will be to talk to the owner nicely and politely; if he does not do anithing about it to keep the dog out of your yard, just call animal control the next time.
