Hen Brutally attacked by Dog!!! Emergency!!!

If you can manage to tube feed her, that would help tremendously. She's not getting enough calories to help her body heal. I'd also give her some poly vi sol without iron 3 or 4 drops twice a day. She looks like she's improving...it takes a long time to heal from something like this. It's good you're keeping her wounds moist so they can heal from the inside out. It doesn't look like infection is a problem, thankfully. If she does pull through, you may have a problem with her out in the rain, not having much upper beak to keep the rain from flowing into her mouth and going down her windpipe. I don't know if that will be an issue or not, but that's a bridge to think about crossing in a few months, not now.

Last night my hen, Hummingbird, was attacked by a dog, and she has wounds all over her. She has been my friendliest and favorite chicken since I started my flock, and I really don't want to lose her. I'll be glad to answer any questions about her injury, and please don't hesitate to post anything that might help. This is an emergency, so please answer soon! Thank you so much!

1) What type of bird, age, and weight.
She's an Easter Egger, about 5-6 years old, and she hasn't lost any weight.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She's just acting really quiet.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
She got attacked sometime last night.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Her back is ripped open near the base of her tail, almost the entire top part of the beak has been ripped off, and she has wounds between her eye and her nostril and on the back of her head. You can see her skull on the head wound, and all the others are bleeding. The beak wound is bleeding the most. The wounds on her head and her back are making me worry that she could have internal bleeding or bleeding in her brain.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
I think that a dog attacked her least night.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
I got her to drink some water, but her eyes are swollen up and she can't see to eat anything. I'm also worried that it'll hurt her beak.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Poop looks normal so far, no blood or anything to signal internal bleeding.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
I wrapped her back in gauze, but I didn't put anything on it, and I cleared away as much blood as possible, and she's in the house in a box.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I'm going to make her some electrolyte water and try to get her to eat some yogurt, and I'd like to treat her myself.

11)Describe the housing/bedding in use.
I put her in a box in the house, but she's on a towel.

12) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

Get it to the vet as soon as possible and make sure to clean those wounds!

How terrible for you two! You are doing a great job. I like to feed boiled mashed egg and mealworms to boost protein. Try to be sure she is at a comfortable temperature. Keep us posted.

Just wanted to point you to this thread in case you haven't seen it, similar beak injury: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...nd-the-top-part-of-her-beak-came-off.1171668/
You have more to deal with in the wounds, but just goes to show that they can adapt and survive with the proper supportive care.
If she's not opening her eyes its going to be hard for her to eat, so you will have to hand feed or tube feed. There is an excellent thread on tube feeding here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/updated-go-team-tube-feeding.805728/
The gray could be bruising, hard to tell without being there. Bruising looks greenish or grayish. Hopefully as the swelling goes down she will open her eyes. If they look gunky or kind of glued shut you can use sterile saline or vetericyn eyewash to gently rinse them and clean them up a bit. Hopefully her eyes weren't damaged. Looks like you are doing as much as you can, just continue to watch for infection in the wounds.

Thank you guys so much for answering so quickly! And thank you so much for the threads, @coach723!
As for food, I ended up taking yogurt and putting it in one of those icing bags with a really tiny point and just slowly "piping" it into her mouth a little bit at a time. I've been doing that for the last couple days, but I still need to get her eyes open so she can eat on her own, as they're still glued shut. The swelling on her face has gone down enough for her to open them, and I don't think that they've been damaged, so that's good at least, and I'm still trying to get them unglued with the saline. I haven't seen any infection in the back wound, her beak does seem to be healing slowly, and her eyes are now the biggest problem.

Thanks again everyone!

Try to get her to eat something other than yogurt. Too much dairy can cause digestive upset. I know you have your hands full. Try some tuna, or scrambled or chopped up cooked egg. You can also make a mash of her regular feed by adding water, and you can mix egg or tuna in that too. If you can get a little in her beak it may get her started. Sometimes if you put or hold the dish in front of them they can manage even if they can't see it.
She just may need help. Glad she's doing better!
