Hen has a Swollen face and Eyes Shut after eating mountain laurel....4 days later she has not improv

Mountain Laurel(Azalea,Rhododendron) is extremely toxic to all animals/humans and is known as a Grayantoxin which affects the central nervous system/heart muscles, causes low blood pressure(blood circulation)can also result in damage to kidneys and liver, internal bleeding in intestines. Difficulty breathing is common with ingestion of Mountain laurel. Vomiting/diarrhea/convulsions are also seen. Symptoms may last several days, but toxin is not cumulative.

Initially the best thing to administer would have been activated charcoal to neutralize toxin.

If you do a search on Mountain laurel and goats there are suggested remedies, but the most common one i have found is activated charcoal to neutralize and mineral oil to move toxin through system(cannot verify as i have never used remedy).

I am going to go pick some up now.

This is good to know. Take a look at my user name. It's because our property is packed jam full of Mountain Laurel. Thankfully, none are in the coop or pen area and we don't free range. BUT I was getting ready to put another pen in an area that has some young Mountain Laurel popping up. I know now to make sure they're hacked out of there.

Thanks for the info!

I honestly have no idea if activated charcoal will help after 5 days,it is usual given at time of ingestion to help neutralize toxins.

So is ours! its everywhere! Unfortunately I blame myself because I dont think she would of eatten it if I had refilled their food that morning (they had been without for 12 hours cause i wanted them to free range more) so I think she ate it our of desperation. It was also a piece that had been knocked to ground level by a falling tree so they had easy access to it....normally i dont think they would bother it too much.
