We got 6 hens from a friend yesterday and noticed today that one has a big ball on the end of one of her toes.Does anyone know what it might be?Thanks

No we haven't really checked them over yet, went and got them in the dark.I'll have my husband check her out tomorrow! And I'll try to get a pic.

They can get mud balls on their toes- very important to soak the foot and then gently remove it if that is what it is.

Also - there is what is called bumblefoot, a staph infection of the foot. There will be a black scab if that is what it is, from what I have read and seen myself. It sometimes needs to be treated- if swollen/red or can lead to tremendous problems.

My first thought was a mud ball too, ours sometimes get them, especially in this muddy weather. Careful when you remove it (as the poster above said, need to soak it first), not to damage the nail.

Bumblefoot? pics would help.
