hen injured - swollen eye - bleeding from the nostrils - please advise

Deep, wide dishes for her. Make a gruel - watery feed - might be easier on her injured beak - a deep soup/stew type thing.

Do you have any PolyViSol - non iron fomula - liquid vitamin? (found in the Rx dept of your grocery if not - infant/child vitamin) If so, dripple two or three drops along her beak so she swallows them.

Flushing her eye sounds good, might have a scratch - maybe some ointment (wish I knew a good type for her eye).

I think the fact that she is trying to eat is encouraging. Sending her healing vibes. - I know you can give aspirin - let me see if I can find the "formula"

Ok found a couple different suggestions:

1 1/4 of a 325mg asprin into a quart of water
~~~~~~~~~
St. Joseph 81mg. plain aspirin tabs and crush one add it to a pint of water
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5 regular (325 mg) aspirin (NO SUBSTITUTES) crushed and mixed with ONE GALLON of water.

Baby aspirin that is truly just aspirin is fine. Just make sure it's not any kind of aspirin substitute. A baby aspirin is 81mg and crushed in a cup of water is about the same strength as five 325 mg regular aspirins in a gallon of water. Gave the smaller batch equivalent since it's one bird and gallon batches are more than what's needed.

Hello!

I tried sending this by email but will also post here hoping that someone can help my little hen!

I have 2 New England Reds that appear to be ill. One is really bad and has a closed eye that looks very similar to the picture you put on BackyardChickens.com around May. I'm certain that an animal did not get to her and she scratches at her eye often. Both appear to have a resiratory issue as they shake their head and wheeze often. I put them on oral antibiotics a week ago and also give them antibiotic eye drops. Now one of them has regular blood from her eye and nostril. I'm really worrried about her and hope that if you can tell me what happed to your hen with the eye issue it may her me look after her.

Brian, i just responded to your email.

I would like to suggest that you post a new topic with pictures of your girls if possible. This way, i think you will be able to get more help more quickly to help your hens.

If this were my hen, I would open her beak and look at the underside of her beak to see if her beak is ok. I would also open her eyelids to get a look at her eye on the injured side. If her eye is damaged/ruptured- that is likely the source of the blood in her nostrils- as there is a connection via the sinuses around & below the eye.

I'm at work now, but will do as you suggest when I get home this evening. I don't think this issue started with an eye injury (I think the eye is a symptom, not the cause). She initially showed swelling round the eye and started keeping the eye closed. She does scratch at it often and I'm afraid she's just making things worse by scratching. I have two birds that have congestion and the one with the eye issue has me really worried. She is eating, but she doesn't get around as well as the others due to the loss of sight.
