A total fire ban is in place across large parts of NSW where extreme or catastrophic fire conditions have been forecast. (ABC Western Plains: Catherine James)

Dozens of NSW schools are closed as extreme weather conditions trigger the first catastrophic fire danger rating in more than two years.

Temperatures are expected to soar today as hot air from inland Australia moves towards the coast while humidity drops.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued its first catastrophic fire danger rating since 2023 for the Lower Central West Plains, while an extreme rating has been issued for 10 districts.

This included the North Western region on the Queensland border, down through central NSW to the Riverina on the Victorian border.

Extreme fire conditions are also forecast for Greater Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra/Shoalhaven.

The NSW Department of Education has closed 25 schools across the state, including eight in the Lower Central West Plains.

Four seasons in one morning... even snow! Hail is pretty uncommon here; it usually travels west of us and barrels the city of Sydney folk.
