hen just died

Hi dmccann, I tried to find anything that would link a heart problem to cocci, but I didn't find anything, this hen could have had a heart defect too, it's really hard to say with out a necropsy. I lost a young hen to what we believe was a heart defect, and also a duckling, I don't know that for fact but sometimes you just know... more so with the duck than the chicken. Defects happen, we just don't see the internal ones till it's too late most of the time which is for the best because we couldn't do anything about them any way. If you really love having chickens then you need to keep going, they bring such joy and then the fresh eggs thats a side benefit. We all have lost birds and it's heart breaking but we somehow learn and keep going on, I can't imagine not having them. I am so sorry you've been through so much, I just hope some how I have helped you to see it's worth it in the end.. Blessing

I am so sorry about your hen. I know how you feel though about throwing in the towel. I'm about there myself, I have something going on with my chickens & roosters & I'm not sure what to do, so I fully understand the worry, frustration & heartache.

Oh girl! I am so sorry to hear about your hen!! I would most definitely do a necropsy if you haven't already just to see if there is anything going on... I had to do one a few nights ago and after posting on here and sending some info and pictures to a professor at MSU, I am about 99% sure she came off the roost and went head first into the nest boxes.. I moved the boxes so it don't happen again!

Wow, dmccann, what a shock for you to endure. It's bad enough when there is something you can pinpoint, but not to know...that's a hard one. I am so sorry.

What happened to your hen sounds like what I've read about flip-over disease, or death from a heart condition. Here is a link that explains more. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=4970294 If you do a search on this site I'm sure you will find more information.

I am very sorry about the loss of your hen. I too had one die suddenly, and it leaves you wondering what in the world happened and worrying about the rest of your flock.

Im truly sorry for your loss of your girl. I just had a Red Star die yesterday morning as well. She was sluggish and just stood in one place so I moved her to a seperate cage and gave her food and water w/vitamins in the water. That was on Saturday and she had been eating although not much because she was making small poops. They actually looked normal. I have lost several of my red stars in 2008. More than the rest of my breeds. This was kinda fell forward but her feet were not sticking up.

My heart goes out to you and am so very sorry for your loss. But don't give up the other girls need you. And she had a wonderful life before she went to chicken heaven. That is how I keep from losing it when one passes.

to you and good luck with the rest of your girls.
