Hello! Our hen has been having trouble laying her eggs and when she does they are covered in calcium. She will lay a normal egg in her box one day, skip a day and then lay 2 within an hour while waddling in the run. She gets all puffed up and looks to be straining. We have 2 hens with a large run and they free range for a little everyday. The other hen lays just fine. Any ideas? Thank you!

If it's just the one hen than it's probably something to do with only her. What are you feeding? How old is she? What breed?

Sorry about that autocorrect, I fixed it. :)

It could be she's getting too much calcium from the layer ration. That can cause calcium deposits, but generally a higher production hen should be okay. A slight respiratory issue can also cause eggs to be not quite right.

You could try switching to an All Flock ration with a separate bowl of oyster shells for the calcium needs and see if it straightens out.

But the other hen is doing just fine. Also, I’m concerned with her laying 2 eggs within an hour. That can’t be good. I’ll look into switching their food. Thank you.

Every hen is different. She could have something going on internally, or her hormones are out of sync. Some hens will release multiple ovum. Sometimes they become double yolk eggs, and sometimes one is without a shell while the other is fully formed.
