We have a cross between a Barred Rock roo and either a Black Copper Maran, Buff Orpington, or Lav Orpington. This little one is about 4-5 weeks old. Any ideas?

Thanks Joshua, we will keep monitoring. I was leaning toward hen just by barred rock standards but im not that great at telling the difference.

It's not screaming rooster at this point. I'd post again in 3ish weeks to double check.

It's tricky when you can't go by the regular rules of pure barred birds, isn't it?

It certainly is. I will post again soon and we can look at him/her again.

Thank you!!

after reading these post I need to research the things you guys were looking at ---what age they start to show and these signs--I got 4 unsexed so this should be interesting where do I go learning station or another site??

I'm leaning towards hen, but mixed chickens have the ability to surprise (I had a sizzle that everyone on BYC said was female, and it really looked that way until "she" started crowing...). I'd say wait a few weeks and post new pictures from different angles (spurs, neck feathers, etc.), but the only certain way to tell is, as everyone says, if she/he starts crowing or lays an egg.

Either way, your barred rock mix is adorable :)
