Easter Eggers are Hatchery Mutt chickens sold in 98% of ALL hatcheries. They come in a verity of colors, shapes and sizes.. but are generally about 5 to 7lbs.. and lay eggs that range from Most of the time green/blue, but can be pale pinkish, White, and brown. This is because Hatcheries breed the Ameruacana and/or the Aruacana with a wide range of Breed chickens, such as Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rock..ect, to create a chicken that lay well lays colored eggs.. and more importantly does Not have the Health issues that Aruacanas have.
(btw: there IS nothing wrong with owning E.E. as they are still a good summer time egg layer and most have pretty nice, kid friendly, temperaments)
Aruacana is a South American Chicken that was created by the Natives of Chillie..I believe.. They Require special breeding techniques to in livability of chicks when hatching.. do to genetic issues, most chicks die before they hatch. Because of this TRUE Aruacana are Very RARE, only a few know breeders in the US, 1 lives here in Middleton Id.
Ameruacana IS a True Breed of chicken that was breed from the Easter Egger and/or the Aruacana into 8 different Standard Colors, a standardize Look, lays ONLY Blue eggs. It is Recognized by the APA..American Poultry Association. Once again, MOST hatcheries do NOT Have True Ameruacana.. they have Easter Eggers. True Ameruacana Are rare and are obtained through Breeders..
Unfortunately the Hatcheries ARE selling Easter Eggers as Ameruacana and/or Aruacana.. Dunlap Hatchery here in Caldwell ID is 1 of those hatcheries, as well McMurray, Privitte, and Sand Hill Preservation Center.
