Okay, I have a barred rock hen around 2 years old. She has been sneezing, sounds like wheezing, but maybe its rattling, and some difficuilty breathing. I gave my whole flock Textroxy HCA-280-Antibiotic for 14 days 8/27/10 to 9/9/10 when I heard a couple of my hens sneezing. Well, my barred rock hen didn't seem to get better. So I went to my local country farm supply store and talked to them for they had raised chickens before. they sugguested Igive her Sulment-antibactial. for 2 days. and not to eat eggs for 10 days. So I put her in a separate pen to give her this medicine. I gave it to her for 2 days, she seem to start getting better. then on 9/16/10, She got worse. started sneezing, wheezing, rattling again really bad. so I called the vet and he said to go ahead and give her the sulment again for 4 to 5 days so I gave it to her on 9/16/10 to 9/20/10 she seemed to be getting better wasn't sneezing, wheezing, and rattling as bad, but then on 9/21/10 I went to check on her first thing this morning and she was like she was having difficult time breathing (gasping for air) So I called the vet again and they said it sounds like it is in her air sacs that basically she is going to die and not to put her with the rest of my flock cause she could make them sick. I am trying to figure out what she has and I found in my book "Storey's guide to Raising Poultry" Chronic Respiratory Disease and it to me sound like her symptoms: rattling, sneezing and sniffling and may be difficult breathing It also said it is not a killer but can cause considerable morbidity especially if treatment is not undertaken soon. I am not ready to give up on her. Her name is Meanie. But what I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on what to try next and help Meanie. I just feel she could get better and not be sick anymore. I was thinking what if I give her the antibiotic again would that help or is it to soon. I really need help. I don't want to lose Meanie. Any suggestion?

thank you for the info I will look into all this. She seems to be doing alittle better today, I didn't notice her gasping for air but she is still sneezing and wheezing some. she didn't seem to drink much water yesterday but I did notice she is still eating and drinking but very little. She stills gets up and moves around alot I try to give her treats a couple times a day. I catch grasshoppers for her all the time and give her some grass clippings. I will let everyone know how she is doing and I will appreicate any suggestions on what to do or try until I can get her tested or something. Thanks again for all suggestion it is very helpful.

Try a little vapour rub like Vicks or snufflebabe, mentholated rub or olbas oil in a little petroleum jelly, rub on nostrils and throat area, it will help keep the airways clear and give tlc.

No No No that has camphor and eucalyptus in it and that can kill them...never put aromatics on a bird's face.

Get a bottle of Tylan50 from tractor supply 9.99 and give her 1/2cc daily for 5 - 7 days. You should see improvement within 3 days. It can be injected or given orally. Do a search for Tylan on this forum great info there.

Thanks I didn't do the vapor rub yet that is good to know. I just went to the feed store and got her some more laying mash for her to eat and I looked there for tylan because someone else told me to get that but they said that they didn't have it and you couldn't buy it anymore but I will check TSC to see if they have it. I am also giving her that textory again cause I talked to that person I was waiting for the phone call from and they said I could go ahead and give it to her again. So I was going to try that stuff again and I am going to go call TSC see if they carry tylan50 and then if they do I will try to go get it this weekend if the textory doesn't Help. For how long do you not eat the chickens eggs when they are laying and you give them textory antibotic (oxyteracycline) it says not to consume there eggs but doesn't say for how long to consume the eggs as for the sulmet (antibacterial) said not to consume eggs for 10 days. Does anyone know how long not to consume the eggs when you give them the textory antibotic? Also, the phone call with this person didn't go well for me because when I told them what was going on with Meanie basically they said I will probably have to put her down. I just am not ready yet to give up on her because she is still eating and drinking . although told I noticed that her poop was really green, does this mean anything?Any and all suggestion helpful. Thanks again everyone for replying it helps to ask more question to decide what I want to do, give up or keep trying.
