Hen stopped laying; swelling below vent

Did you check her temperature? That may calm your worries knowing she doesn't have a fever and also tell you if perhaps you should consider having her treated if she does have a fever. Unfortunately with egg peritonitis she can keep laying internally while your trying to treat her infection making it worse. kinda like taking one step forward then two steps back kinda thing. There is a drug out there called Lupron which is a hormone that will stop her ovary from releasing eggs for a few weeks so she can recover from the infection. I have not tried this drug yet for my girls, my vet says its very expensive ($400 a vile). It is also possible to have a chicken spayed but it is a bit tricky because the ovary can be hard to access. I've heard you need to have a good vet who knows what they're doing, they have to remove every single follicle or she can still ovulate into her abdomen. Also there is drug called meloxicam that can help with the swelling (it's a NSAID ). And of course she'll need an antibiotic. I have two hens who have been sick with it for a week now and this is the first time I've had to deal with egg yolk peritonitis but I have been reading about it as much as I possibly can. my girls are on 2 different antibiotics and a iron supplement and I still can't get their fevers down. They do seem do be feeling better. I let them out in the Sun today with the rest of my flock and they spent the day digging in the dirt, eating bugs, taking dust baths and sunbathing! It was a very good day after a very stressful week. if one things for sure it's that chickens are tuff little creatures.

Thank you so much. I am still watching her closely. She seems to be less full in the morning and heavier by evening...do your girls? I am praying this thing will go away on it's own although I am realistic. She is on antibiotic and acting great just like your girls. Would a vet need to administer $400 worth of this drug? YIKES!!!
Thanks,
Carolina

I'm not sure how much of the Lupron would need to be administered. I've never done it before. my girls's abdomens seem to be just as swollen in the morning as they are at night. it's a good sign your girl is acting well! One thing I forgot to mention, you can give her some pedialyte if you think maybe she may be a little dehydrated.

Hi there,
Still about the same today. Very warm and swollen but she's happy and on antibiotic (yellow from tractor supply.) One new thing I did notice...she seems to be pulling feathers off of her own neck front. This can't be a good thing. Can't see any bugs on her. Probably stress. I now I'm ready to start pulling my own hair out over her. I'm praying hard!
Thanks so much,
Carolina

Hmm yeah the only thing I would think would cause her to pull her feathers out would be stress. either that or being broody. maybe you should bring her inside so she can rest better. I've been keeping my girls inside for over a week now and I feel like they're able to rest better because they don't have to worry about being bullied. would you consider taking her to the vet?

Hi there, I do not know how to temp a hen :)
I want to take her to the vet very badly but just to get in the office is $80. Then, she will need meds and exams and maybe procedure for drainage etc. and they told me it can be between $400-500 once it is all said and done. It's hard to find bird specialists here too.
She is still ok, I might bring her in but she looks happy in her pen within the large pen. At least she isn't lonely.
I need to look at other antibiotics maybe.
Thanks for continued support,
Carolina
