My 8.5 month old Buff Orpington hen just swallowed a screw. We were fixing a part of their nesting box and accidentally dropped one of the screws and she got to it before we could. I haven’t found any recent threads about this. What do I do? It was .5” long and I’ve seen some people say they can pass them, but theres also a risk of hardware disease. What can I do to help her?

I have read where you can give her metamucil to help her but she really needs to get to a vet. It can be fatal unfortunately and I am so sorry this has happened. Hopefully she can pass it but with it being that long it might do some damage going through. If no vet then just watch her poop and we will have to pray for the best.

I guess someone used cow magnets which I have never heard of before and worked the screw back out of the crop and into the mouth and was able to reach in a retrieve it. Sorry about the metamucil, I was thinking it was a duck we were dealing with. Hopefully she will pass it and all will be well if you cannot get it to come back up.

Chickens frequently eat screws, small nails, staples, glass, and jewelry they find lying around their coop and run. Sometimes it is not witnessed, and some may be okay. It could pierce the wall of the crop, or even work its way into the abdomen. We had one person who found a screw coming out of the belly. I believe they cut off the sharp tip and left it there, since it had been there a long time. If you have vet care, they may xray the chicken to find out if it is in the crop or gizzard.
