sorry about the chicks dieing
there is generally not much you can do for the injured chicks in this instance
but at least you tried

one never knows what a suraget mother will do to new chicks

here is some hints on the next time you try it

always rub your hands on the behind of the hen
and then at night put them in her nest but as you put them in each chick needs rubbed on her back or behind

as her scent will then be on the chicks

having the hens scent on your hands is a must

generally she will then inspect them and decide what she will do

sorry again for your loss

any questions email me

For whatever it is worth: don't beat yourself up! We had a hen hatch out babies in January and she did really well with them for several weeks. One by one we found them dead (pecked to death). We finally caught on to what was really happening (just couldn't believe she was doing this to her own chicks) and booted her out of the shelter we had her in. We managed to save one little baby which grew into a beautiful Rhode Island Red hen with gorgeous bright yellow legs. We have two white rocks that have been setting for over a month. They have hatched a total of 23 babies (from all different breeds) and we take the babies from them daily. We should have done this with the other hen.....but we learn. Hope you have better luck with the next batch.
