We never found her, I think something got her during the day. I thought she was lost with my Cochin but I finally located the Cochin in the garage, stuffed under some shelving, apparently hiding. We never saw evidence, and all the gates and fences were closed, so I would guess Hawk as a likely suspect.
I have 18 in the flock now, and I know in my head that I will lose them from time to time since they are not in the coop all the time, but it's still distressing when it happens.
But I can't imagine not letting them free-range. It's quality-of-life over quantity-of-life and you just can't beat how happy they are scratching in the perennial garden.
