Last night when I went to put my flock up I noticed that my little Golden Comet was sleeping in the nesting box. This is not typical and I suspected something was wrong. When I went out to let them out this morning she was still in there. I took her in the house to check her out and the only thing that seemed to be wrong is that her right eye was swollen and discolored. Not sure what has happened. It is not runny or bleeding, just seems to be swollen. Does anyone have any experience with eye problems? Other

than her eye bothering her she seems fine. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

Could she have been pecked around the eye or stung by something? Respiratory diseases such as mycoplasma (MG) can cause swelling in the eye from a sinus infection. If she starts to show symptoms of a respiratory infection such as nasal or eye drainage, sticky crusty eye, sneezing or rattles when breathing, then I would treat her with Tylan, Gallimycin, or Oxytetracycline in her water. Tylan 50 works as an injection or given by mouth. Cleaning the eye and applying plain Neosporin or Terramycin ointment to the eye may also help if there is infection. Here is some reading about respiratory diseases including MG: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

I had a couple chickens who had an eye issue about a week ago. They didn't have any drainage just swollen eye and they wouldn't open the eye. I gave them Tylan50 for 3 days and they were as good as new!
