Hen With Prolapsed Vent Needs to Lay Egg

Time for me to get to sleep. I'll check your post in the morning. Keep her exposed vent moist and get the egg out so you can get the vent back in. If it comes out again surgery will be needed to tack it in place. I wish there was a way you could turn her eggs off for a while to give her a chance to heal. God Bless and I'll say a prayer for her. Thanks! Your help has been much appreciated :)

We are keeping it moist and will see what we can do for her... we’ve never had this happen before

Give her some calcium (for example, 1/4 of a calcium tablet, 1/2 of a Tums, crushed egg shell) in a little bit of yogurt or egg. Get her drinking water. Take her into the bathroom, and run the water or shower hot to create steam. Place her in a little bed. Keep her vent moist with oil, and try to pry the egg out around the edges without breaking it. If she has not laid the egg by morning, I would take her to a vet. Dehydration and low calcium can cause egg binding, and that may cause a prolapse. Good luck and let us know how she is doing in the morning.

Ok so an update...

She is alive. She FINALLY laid her egg this morning, so I feel a lot better about it.

We’ve been keeping her hydrated with water with acv, oregano, and rosemary. We soaked her in a warm bath with lavender. We cleaned her stuff and put it back in, but it came out again. We are about to put it back again.

Aside from the obvious though, she looks good. Her face is lit up and she’s moving around. However, she smells terribly like infection. We can’t see anything that’s infected and we’ve been keeping what we can clean. Is there any kind of infection she could have inside her ovidoct or intestines or something??

Hi, Glad she finally laid the egg. It may be popping back out because it's swollen or infected. It can get infected if feces gets into the oviduct. Do you have anything to put in her water to reduce the swelling and help with any infection? It may be that the only way to fix the issue is surgery to tack the duct back in place. If the attachments where torn then surgery would be the only way to keep it in. Every time she pushed to poop or lay it will pop out. Any internal organ exposed to the outside can get infected.

Ok so she is doing a little better than she was yesterday. She doesn't smell quite as bad, though she still does just a little (but it's not nearly like it was). I think the oregano and the vinegar in the water have been helping with what you mentioned, because oregano is anti-inflammatory and it has antibiotic properties to it. It isn't nearly as swollen as it was, either which is good.

We've been giving her a little scrambled egg, which she has been munching right up. We put it back in last night, and it stayed in the longest it has so far, until just about an hour ago. Oh, and she's gotten several warm lavendar baths (I think she's starting to like this :D) So we are going to put it back again, and I'm hoping it stays this time. There is definitely a good difference though, so I'm hopeful she will be ok!

Thank you to everyone for giving me advice and talking me through this!
