Hen With Prolapsed Vent Needs to Lay Egg

Ok so, I just went to look and we were going to put it back in. It went back in on its own! I think that's probably a good sign? When she pooped is stuck out just a little, but then went back in again. I'm thinking that means her muscles there are getting stronger?

That is good news. As long as she doesn't have any black looking tissue, she should heal up. The daily baths have probably been helping, and I would use some hibiclens or betadine if you suspect infection. Hoping for a good recovery.

Thank you! We've been using nascent iodine, which is basically the same as betadine, only it is ingestable for people. We don't give it to her to ingest, but we cleaned her with it last night, and probably will in a little bit just to be safe.

I just went through a prolapse about 2 months ago. It took 1 1/2 of pushing it back in twice a day but now she's back to her old self!! I had to treat for infection too. Just wanted to let you know I can be fixed. It took daily baths and antibiotic and protein but I wish you the best with this. It can be rough

Thank you for sharing this! It took 1 1/2 what of pushing it in twice a day? Sorry I think a word got cut off there, but I'm curious to know how long it took. I'm glad to know you were able to fix your hen! :)

Sorry... about 1 1/2 weeks. I kept her in the " emergency vet". Kennel in my house for about 2 weeks. Kept her in the dark to keep her from laying and high protein diet. I had suspicions of infection so gave her antibiotic. Just wanted to give some encouragement and let you know it can be fixed. I know it's rough. Like really rough. That's actually how I discovered BYC!

Thanks I appreciate it! That definitely is encouraging. I'm curious, doesn't protein encourage them to lay? I don't know much about it, but I saw in a vent prolapse video not to give them a lot of protein to keep them from laying. Either way, we've been giving her egg to keep her getting vitamins in her system and since it's easily digestable.

Yes I was completely freaking out when I first saw it. I thought she had a lot of blood clumped on her bum but then I looked it up and found a BYC post about it as well  There is definitely a lot of great info on here! It's a great chicken community lol. If you have chickens and are active on the internet at all, I think it's a must to join!

I believe someone suggested to me protein after she stopped playing only because mine would barely eat anything. And she was losing weight. Sorry, I should've mentioned that. You are right though. But don't give up I had to push that thing back in twice a day for what felt like forever

That's good news. Good job and kudo's to you for all the hard work taking care of your hen. Anytime you need advice and I can help, I'll be here. Rick
