One of my hens has some severe swelling around her face and neck. I am new to chickens and I have no idea what is wrong. I did read something about air sacks possibly being able to leak. She was fine the say before yesterday. There was some minor swelling yesterday morning. Today there is some major swelling. I have included some pictures. If they aren't clear enough let me know and I'll get more. Thank you in advance.

It could be a leaking airsac, but have you considered that she might have been stung by something? Beesting and tick bites might be a possibility. If it is a leaking air sac (subcutaneous emphysema,) a needle may be inserted just under the skin and the air withdrawn with a syringe or pressed out.) If she was stung, the swelling might ho down in a day or two. A clearer picture that we could enlarge might be good. Here is a video that shows a leaking air sac being deflated:

Thank you! I will try to get a clearer picture soon. I have considered that she could have been stung by something. We have scorpions and snakes where I live. The girls just started to free range more and there are areas with a lot of old leaves they are really enjoying exploring. I just wasn't sure. I found another post with a chicken who looked similar and the owner thought she had been bitten by a snake.

I took some additional pictures and I made sure they were larger files than the last pictures. I can upload larger files of the first pics if that would help. Thank you!

She is doing much better. The swelling has gone down a lot. I think you were correct about a snake bite. Thank you!

So glad that the swelling went down. Did you see any marks that might have pointed to a snake or a sting?
